Using Lemons for a Simple Microwave Cleaning Method

Microwaves have revolutionized how we approach cooking and food preparation, standing as a testament to modern-day convenience. From the rapid reheating of last night’s leftovers and the swift defrosting of frozen delicacies to baking, steaming, and roasting food items, this appliance ensures that a warm meal is always just minutes away. But with a multitude of functions at its fingertips, it’s no wonder we can’t avoid food splatters and spills.

Over time, the food remnants can lead to stubborn, dried-on gunk and a lingering, unpleasant odor. But cleaning your microwave doesn’t have to be a daunting task because Mother Nature has a simple, effective, and fragrant solution for you that’s likely already in your pantry — lemons. Besides being a delightful culinary ingredient, lemons have long been appreciated for their natural cleansing properties.

These citric acid-laden fruits can easily break down grime, eliminate bacteria, and leave a fresh, uplifting scent behind. Lemons are also a cleaning option that’s kind to you and the environment, and in just a few easy steps they help restore your microwave to its pristine state.

How to clean your microwave using lemons

putting bowl of lemon in microwave

Begin by gathering your supplies, you don’t need a lot — a microwave-safe bowl, a fresh lemon, a measuring cup, a soft cloth or sponge, and water. To prepare the lemon solution, pour about half to one cup of water into the bowl, then, slice your lemon into halves. Squeeze the juice of both halves into the water, then toss the lemon halves into the bowl as well.

Pop the bowl inside your microwave and set the timer for three to five minutes. As the water heats up, it will begin to produce steam, while the lemon will release its cleansing oils and scent. Once the timer goes off, let the bowl sit inside the microwave for an additional five to 15 minutes without opening the microwave door. This steamy, citrus-infused environment will work wonders on the dried-on food particles, softening them and making them much easier to wipe away.

Now carefully remove the bowl, as it will be hot. Take your soft cloth or sponge and start wiping down the inside of the microwave. You’ll be amazed at how effortlessly the grime comes off. Remove the turntable and wash it clean too. Don’t forget to wipe down the microwave door both inside and outside, plus the control panel (you can add a squirt of dishwashing soap to the sponge for these parts and rinse afterward). Now your appliance not only looks sparkling clean but also smells incredibly fresh.
